USM Chancellor Jay A. Perman on Solidarity With Ukraine
That University System of Maryland condemns with one voice Russia's unconscionable invasion of Ukraine, an unprovoked and indefensible attack on its national sovereignty.
We stand with Ukraine. We honor the humanity and courage of its people. We pray for their safety and for peace.
Moreover, we support all those in our USM community who have ties to Ukraine - and to Russia - who fear for their loved ones and are powerless to help them.
At the same time, it's important to acknowledge that there are conflicts - state-sanctioned acts of aggression, violent infringements on human and civil rights - that imperil the freedom and the lives of untold numbers of people around the world. And, therefore, we remember alongside our Ukrainian friends all those who are harmed and persecuted in the shadows of a global spotlight.
Amid this Ukrainian suffering, we've seen heartbreaking examples of strength and solidarity that redeem our humanity and bring us hope. In the University System's scholarship and service, it's this compassion - this striving for connection - that guides us.
